ARANESP® | PROCRIT® | EPOGEN®
Aranesp®, Procrit® and Epogen® (erythropoiesis-stimulating agents) are injections administered to patients with anemia as a result of dialysis and chemotherapy. When given at high doses, these drugs have been found to increase the risk of blood clots, strokes, heart attacks and death.
A recent study (called the "TREAT study" [Trial to Reduce cardiovascular Events with Aranesp® Therapy]) of Aranesp® found that not only did Aranesp® fail to reduce cardiovascular events, it was associated with an almost two-fold increase in the risk of stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease. The TREAT study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) in October 2009, concluded that in many patients with diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and moderate anemia, the increased risk that was uncovered outweighed any potential benefit of ESA drugs such as Aranesp®, Procrit® and Epogen®.
Aranesp®, Procrit® and Epogen® are all manufactured by Amgen Inc. Aranesp® has long been one of the biotech company's top-selling drugs. According to reports, these drugs are the single largest medication expense for Medicare. Interestingly, 15 states recently filed a lawsuit accusing Amgen of offering kickbacks to medical providers to boost sales across the country.
