DEPUY (JOHNSON & JOHNSON) HIP IMPLANT RECALL
DePuy Orthopaedics issued a recall for its ASR XL Acetabular System implants and DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System implants as a result of a high failure rate which has required patients to undergo additional surgery to replace the implants. These popular hip implant systems were first sold in 2004. Approximately 93,000 people may be affected by this recall.
Data revealed that a larger percentage of patients who received the ASR Hip System experienced pain and other symptoms that led to a second hip replacement surgery, called a revision surgery. Five years after implantation, approximately 12% of patients (1 in 8) who had received the ASR resurfacing device and 13% of patients (1 in 8) who had received the ASR total hip replacement needed to have revision surgery. The risk of hip problems was especially high among those implanted in women and those with ASR head sizes below 50 mm.
The company is advising patients with an ASR device to visit their surgeons for evaluation of their implant performance. Yearly monitoring is being recommended to ensure the ASR hip replacement is functioning well, even in the absence of symptoms.
The ASR device is part of a class of large diameter, monoblock hip resurfacing and replacement devices which were often selected by surgeons for use in younger patients. The system was marketed as a more stable device than other hip implant systems.
