denture cream    DENTURE CREAM

There are approximately 35 million denture wearers in the United States alone.  People who use denture cream and other denture adhesives may be at risk for zinc poisoning, according to a study published in the scientific journal Neurology® in 2008. That study found a risk of zinc build-up in users of denture cream, which can result in neurological problems, including hyperzincemia and hypocuremia.  Hyperzincemia is zinc toxicity while hypocupremia refers to abnormally low levels of copper in a person's blood. The researchers found that in the denture-wearing patients they studied, the residual zinc levels were higher than normal. READ THE STUDY

Many denture creams contains zinc, which is used as an odor blocking agent.  The FDA does not require that manufacturers list ingredients on the label so you may be unaware that the cream you use contains this mineral.

Zinc is a mineral that in small doses is good for the body. In fact, many vitamin supplements contain small amounts of zinc. However, in large doses, zinc can cause zinc poisoning (hyperzincemia), the symptoms of which are lethargy, dizziness and copper deficiency (hypocupremia) that can lead to neurological disorders including permanent numbness in the limbs.

Recently, The New York Times published an account of one woman's ordeal with denture cream zinc poisoning. The article illustrates just how devastating this condition can be.  According to the account in The New York Times excess use of denture cream caused a woman to experience problems with movement and balance. In addition, her feet were numb and she had lost the ability to feel hot, cold or a light touch from her knees to her feet. The cause of her condition was a mystery until her doctor realized she was using large amounts of denture cream.  Once the cause of her problem was determined, the patient switched to a cream that did not contain zinc. According to The Times a year later the patient is feeling better, but is undergoing physical therapy because she still has difficulty walking.

The symptoms of zinc poisoning include:

  • vomiting
  • stomach cramps
  • diarrhea
  • numbness or tingling in the feet, legs, hands, and/or arms
  • reduction in strength or ability to move legs or feet, or arms and hands
  • unexplained pain in the extremities
  • tendency to stumble or fall down
  • lack of balance
  • change or decrease in walking stride
  • abnormal blood pressure and heart rate
  • reduced ability to perspire
  • constipation and/or bladder dysfunction
  • sexual dysfunction
