GADOLINIUM-BASED MRI CONTRAST AGENT
May 23, 2007. The Food and Drug Administration asked manufacturers of gadolinium-based contrast agents to include "black box warnings" and extensive warning information in the drugs' literature and packaging. These warnings were the result of reports linking nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF), a severe and debilitating fatal disease, to gadolinium exposure in patients who suffered from severe kidney disorders and had been exposed to gadolinium-based contrast agents. An MRI, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is designed to view a patient's internal tissues and organs, and it often involves injecting a dye or contrast agent before the exam in order to illuminate such tissues and organs more fully. Gadolinium is such a contrast agent which can be injected into a patient's bloodstream just before an MRI exam, thus enabling healthcare workers to distinguish the internal structures.
Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis is a condition that causes the skin to swell, thicken, and tighten, especially in the arms and legs. For many, Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis makes it painful or impossible to walk or do other activities requiring the movement of joints. Some patients experiencing Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis note sharp, deep pain and burning, as well as blisters, bruises, and lesions around the joints. There is no one treatment that works for every Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis patient.
