JANUVIA® LINKED TO PANCREATITIS
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned consumers and healthcare providers that the diabetes drug Januvia® may be associated with pancreatitis, a serious inflammation of the pancreas that can lead to hospitalization or death. Januvia® is manufactured by pharmaceutical giant, Merck. This is the second time in just over a year that a diabetes drug has been linked to pancreatitis - the previous case was Byetta®, which is co-marketed by Amylin and Eli Lilly.
The FDA stated it had received 88 reports of pancreatitis in patients taking Januvia® and Janumet®, a related drug that combines Januvia® with the diabetes medicine metformin, including two cases of hemorrhagic or necrotizing pancreatitis, between October 16, 2006, and February 9, 2009. In 21% of the reported cases, pancreatitis occurred within 30 days of starting Januvia® or Janumet®, with 53% of the cases resolving once the drug was discontinued.
Merck's sales of Januvia® and Janumet® totaled more than $1 billion in the first six months of this year.
