POLARIS ATV RECALLS
DECEMBER 2009--DEFECTIVE SUSPENSION SYSTEM
In the latest product recall involving risk of serious injury related to all-terrain vehicles (ATV) made by Polaris, the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of 8,500 of the company's ATVs. The recall involves certain ATVs manufactured by Polaris Industries Inc., of Medina, Minnesota.
Polaris has been under scrutiny in the past for reporting violations involving all-terrain vehicles. In 2005, the company agreed to pay a $950,000 penalty to settle allegations that the ATV manufacturer failed to timely inform CPSC of serious defects and hazards in certain models of the company's ATVs.
In the most recent recall, approximately 8,500 Polaris ATVs have been recalled because of a defective suspension system which could cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle. According to the CPSC announcement of the ATV recall, the front suspension ball joint stem can separate from the steering knuckle on certain Polaris All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), causing loss of steering control.
This recall involves model year 2009 and 2010 Polaris Sportsman ATVs (models listed below) with certain VIN numbers. The VIN number and manufacture date are located on the right front of the ATV on the frame rail next to the front shock.
| Model Year | Model Name |
|---|---|
| 2009 | Sportsman XP 550 |
| 2009 | Sportsman XP 550 EPS |
| 2010 | Sportsman 550 |
| 2010 | Sportsman X2 550 |
| 2010 | Sportsman Touring 550 |
| 2009/2010 | Sportsman XP 850 |
| 2009/2010 | Sportsman XP850 EPS |
| 2010 | Sportsman Touring 850 |
The ATVs were sold by Polaris dealers nationwide from February 2009 through November 2009. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ATVs.
JULY 2009--FIRE HAZARD
The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of almost 5,000 ATVs manufactured by Polaris Industries Inc., of Medina, Minnesota, due to the risk of fire and injury. The valve assembly can fail in freezing temperatures, causing oil to leak into the exhaust system. This could pose a fire and burn hazard to consumers. CPSC has received reports of the valve assembly failing in freezing temperatures, resulting in three small fires. Minor fire damage to air boxes, ignition coils and the seat were also reported.
This recall involves the 2009 Polaris ATV sold under the names Sportsman ESP XP 850 and Sportsman XP 850 ATVs. The model and serial number identification decal is located on the left side of the machine on the frame rail below the front fender.

MAY 2008--REAR WHEEL LOCKING UP
CPSC has recalled 11,300 Outlaw IRS ATVs due to the risk of severe injury. The ATV, manufactured by Polaris Industries Inc., of Medina, Minnesota, contains a retention bolt that can come loose causing the rear wheels to lock up and the driver to lose control of the vehicle. This recall involves a defect which poses a risk of serious injury to the rider.
The recall involves certain 2006-2008 Polaris Outlaw ATVs with independent rear suspension (IRS). The affected models are:

FEBRUARY 2008--DEFECTIVE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of 95,000 ATVs made by Polaris Industries, Inc. of Medina, Minnesota. This is in addition to 45,000 of the company's ATVs recalled for the same defect in 2005, involving defective Electronic Control Modules (ECM) that overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to riders.
Since the original recall announced in June 2005, Polaris has received 372 additional reports of smoking and/or melted ECMs on the recalled ATVs, and 20 reports of fires, nine of which involved property damage beyond the ATV.
This recall involves select 2005 through 2006 model Polaris Sportsman and Scrambler 500 ATVs. The model and serial numbers are printed on a decal attached to the front side of the radiator (Sportsman) or the top of the front cab cover (Scrambler 500). Serial numbers are permanently stamped into the left frame rail behind the left front wheel. The recalled models are listed on the chart below.
